Morocco is a year-round destination, but “best time” depends on where you are going — the Sahara, the Atlas, the imperial cities and the Atlantic coast follow different calendars. Here is the honest version.
The short answer
March–May and September–November are the sweet spot: warm sunny days, cool nights in the desert, and bearable temperatures everywhere. If you can only pick one month, take April or October.
Season by season
Spring (March–May) — the all-rounder
Days are warm (20–28 °C), the Atlas is green, almond blossom is out in February–March and the desert is comfortable both day and night. This is peak season for a reason — book desert camps a few weeks ahead.
Summer (June–August) — coast yes, desert carefully
The imperial cities hit 38 °C+, and midday in Merzouga can pass 45 °C. Tours still run — with early-morning and late-afternoon activities, siesta at midday, and air-conditioned transport — but if you struggle with heat, keep summer for Essaouira, Agadir and the coast, where the Atlantic keeps things at 22–26 °C.
Autumn (September–November) — the desert’s best season
Arguably the finest weeks in the Sahara: the heat drops to pleasant levels, the light turns golden and camps are less crowded than in spring. City touring is comfortable again from October.
Winter (December–February) — empty, crisp, cold nights
Sunny days around 18 °C in Marrakech, near-empty sites, and spectacular desert skies. The trade-off: desert nights drop near 0 °C — camps provide heavy blankets, but pack a real jacket. Snow can close Tizi n’Tichka for a day or two; we always reroute when needed.
Quick reference
| Destination | Best months | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Sahara / Merzouga | Oct–Apr | Jul–Aug midday |
| Marrakech & Fes | Mar–May, Oct–Nov | Aug heat |
| Atlas / Imlil | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | Jan–Feb (snow) |
| Essaouira & coast | Jun–Sep | — (good all year) |
| Chefchaouen | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | Winter (cold, wet) |
Ramadan and holidays
Travelling during Ramadan is perfectly doable — restaurants inside tourist sites serve as usual, evenings are festive, and sites are quieter. Just expect slightly shorter opening hours.
