3 days from Marrakech to Merzouga: what a Sahara desert tour really looks like

← All articles

If you only have three days in southern Morocco, this is the route everyone recommends — and for good reason. The Marrakech to Merzouga loop packs the High Atlas, a UNESCO kasbah, the Todra gorges and a genuine Sahara night into one long weekend. Here is what those three days actually look like.

Day 1 — Over the Tizi n’Tichka to the kasbahs

You leave Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), the highest road in North Africa. The switchbacks are half the fun — Berber villages cling to the slopes and the light changes every ten minutes.

The afternoon belongs to Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar that starred in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Climb to the granary at the top for the classic postcard view over the palm grove. You sleep in or near the Dades valley — dinner and breakfast are normally included.

Day 2 — Todra gorges and into the dunes

The morning starts at the Todra gorges, where 300-metre limestone walls squeeze a river corridor — climbers love it, and you can walk right up the canyon. Then the landscape flattens into the hamada until, suddenly, the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

This is the moment you came for: a camel trek at sunset into the dunes, about an hour’s slow sway to your desert camp. Dinner is cooked at the camp, the drumming starts after dark, and the stars do the rest. In a private camp you get your own tent with a real bed.

Day 3 — Sunrise, then the long beautiful road back

Wake before dawn. The sunrise over Erg Chebbi is silent, cold and completely worth the early alarm. After breakfast at camp you ride back (or take the 4x4 option) and retrace the road to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.
